Grading Policy: Grades will be based on a variety of formative and summative assessments, distributed throughout each marking period, that measure mastery of skills. Each marking period grade will be comprised of 25% formative assessments and 75% summative assessments. Formative assessments may include but are not limited to quizzes, homework, class work, and participation. Summative assessments may include but are not limited to tests, research papers, and essays. Individual grades may be weighted according to type of assignment. Teacher may change grades from summative to formative, change weights, or delete assignments at any time if it is determined that it is necessary to make such adjustments to more accurately reflect student work and achievement in a fair and balanced manner. Students will be also given a Comprehensive Final Exam.
Make-up Work Policy:
Students
who are absent due to illness or other excused absences have 2 days to make up all work that s/he missed. After
2 days the work is
considered “late work” and may be accepted for a late grade of 50% or
may be given additional partial credit at the discretion of the
teacher. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain
missed assignments upon return to school.
Students who do not complete work during class time due to lack of
effort will receive a grade of zero for that work and may not expect to submit it later
for a grade higher than a 70.
Required Materials: Students are expected to come to class each day prepared with something to write with, paper, and a
binder in
which to keep handouts and work for this course. Students should not mix work from other classes, but should use dividers to organize work into sections for each class.
* Detention may result for failure to bring the
required materials each day to class and for failure to work in class on the assigned classwork.
Language Arts Skills (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Viewing, and Presenting) Students are expected to practice each of these skills and to develop them further by intensive reading and writing. Viewing and presenting will also be skills developed in all language arts courses. Speaking is also an important language arts skill. Students are expected to participate in class discussions on a
daily basis which may include whole class
discussions, small group discussions, and independent
and/or group presentations. Students are expected to refrain from socializing in class about matters that do not relate to the curriculum and classwork.
Bathroom Passes: To optimize instructional time and learning, and to limit traffic in the halls during class times, students are expected to use the bathroom before or after classes. Because there are occasional emergency situations, students will be allotted three hall passes per marking period. Class periods are no longer than 80 minutes. If your child has a condition which requires more frequent access to the restroom, please provide a doctor's note that states this, and an exception will be made for him (or her).
Nurse Passes: If your child has a condition which requires him (or her) to receive medication during school hours, please make arrangements with the school nurse to dispense the medication. The nurse cannot provide any medication without doctor's instructions. This includes basic medicines such as headache relief, or to treat such things as stomach aches, etc. Therefore students will only be permitted to go to the nurse in an emergency situation or if s/he has medication with doctor's instructions on file with the nurse. Please let me know if your child has a medical need to visit the nurse on a frequent basis.
Cell Phones must be OFF and OUT OF SIGHT: Infractions
will result in confiscation of the cell phone and will require parent pick up
in the main office after school. If a student is using a cell phone during an exam, s/he will receive a grade of zero as it is possible for students to send text messages of test answers to each other on these devices.
